Epipactis Helleborine
Epipactis Helleborine, June 16th 2002. By the end of blooming season for the orchids that I have been studing at Bigbasin, I found one of these as early as May, and still have some blooming at the end of August, which is from the earliest of the Coral Roots to the latest Rein Orchids. This would be fine except that this Orchid is from Europe, first noticed as keeping a viable population in 1879 Syracuse NY, and first noticed in California in San Mateo County 1950, Sna Francisco in 1961, and is more common than all of the other orchids combined, in Big Basin, by my count this year. It grows in many different soils and even in dense stands of Posion Oak, which has growth inhibitors that stop most other plants from competing at a close range.
