Greens Peak, AZ Scenic View areas and Lookouts on BLM or National Forest lands are good candidates for a free camping site. Such is the case with Greens Peak in east-central Arizona. Located west of Springerville and north of Arizona Rte. 260, Greens Peak is a perfectly conical cinder cone. An old fire lookout tower appears to be abandoned but the microwave and radio towers appear to be regularly maintained. Being a former fire lookout, the views from the 10,133-foot summit are unobstructed (and the TV reception is so good we pulled in Flagstaff, AZ). A couple of cars visited the peak while we were camping but none of them stayed. The occupants just came up to use the outhouse and look at the view. The wildflowers were stunning here in spited of the extreme drought of 2002.
