The Fever...

One night, I stayed up a little later than usual with Miranda, so we could have some time alone. We were in her bed together (on the bottom bunk) having a little "girl talk". It was about an hour or more after Brianne had fallen asleep in her room across the hall. Suddenly, in the middle of our conversation, we saw Brianne's door begin to open. It opened only about 5-10 inches and then stopped as I called out, "Brianne?". She didn't answer. The door continued to open and this time both Miranda and I again called out to Brianne...the door stopped. Then it continued a third time to open even more, only this time it opened all of the way. There, upon her bed, we found Brianne where she had been all along. She'd been asleep the entire time. We don't know why her door opened in three separate movements, but both Miranda and I witnessed it...

The next night I was going through the research on our house, getting ready to compile some for this site, when Brianne came down to my office. She said her room was so hot she had to change her clothes, since she had soaked her bed in sweat. She felt cold to the touch. She begged me to turn on the Air Conditioning. I told her it was already on...it was still on just as it had been since the beginning of summer. Her room is usually very comfortable, even during our hottest summer days, but for some reason it was an oven that October night. I told her to open a window and try to get more sleep. After she went back up to bed, I decided to check something on the map of the cemetary I had within the house documents. It was just last night we saw her door open by itself and then the next night her room was sweltering hot for the first and only time since moving in. Sure enough, on that very same day, October 2, 1827,records show that Elizabeth Ann Middleton Smith, daughter of Fielder Bowie Smith and Lucy Middleton Smith, died in the home at the age of 1 year, 11 months and 26 days...she's buried in the cemetary behind the home.
