This book's original title was Surviving. Of course, the 911 tragedy first sprang to mind. At the same time, I considered the other things in life that we survive. Natural disasters, starvation, disease, abuse, etc.

Using the doll images came from a visit to a friend's studio, where I noticed a box of old doll parts on a shelf. They were fresh in my mind, and new to my work. Armed with these images I set off looking for a quote that would help move the reader through the book and also to make it a book of hope, of determination rather than a book of despair. Here it is.
