"The ART of the FAKE"

THE ART OF THE FAKE, Taken from the pages of COSMOPOLITAN Magazine.

Extensions are the ULTIMATE in (nearly) instant gratification--IF you're willing to plunk down the cash. *BONDING*...The traditional method for adding length involves hot gluing sections of extensions to your own hair at the root. While the process is popular because of its relatively low cost ($300.00 and up for results that last up to four months), some stylist warn that the glue feels stiff and can damage hair. *COLD FUSION*...The newest way to attach extensions is called "cold fusion" bonding, in which tiny sections of human hair are attached to natural hair near the root with a flexible, keratin-based polymer. The extensions can be as long as 24 inches--and some say they're undetectable to the trained eye. The process takes up to five hours, cost between $1,500 and $3,000, and last up to six months. *WEAVES*...In this technique, extensions are braided to the underlayer of natural hair. But despite the lack of glue, the hair can feel bumpy and look lumpy (especially on women with fine hair). The process takes up to four hours, cost about $1,200, and last about a month before the braids loosen. *PIECES*...Clip-on pieces have none of the commitment--or the realistic look--of bonded, fused, or woven extensions. They range from short bangs to long ponytails to '60s-style falls and "are great fun for an evening out", says hair stylist Ray Allington of the Bumble and Bumble salon in New York City. "The color should be a perfect match. There's nothing worse than a color difference, unless you're going for a Debbie Harry rock thing." Store-bought synthetic pieces can cost as little as $25; custom made human ones, made by a hairstylist, can be $2,000 to $6,000. THE ART OF THE FAKE, Taken from the pages of COSMOPOLITAN MAGAZINE.
