Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, CA

Niagara-on-the-Lake is a colonial town that has been designated the prettiest town in Canada. Like Williamsburg, VA, it had fallen into disrepair until a Japanese lady decided to buy up a lot of the properties, renovate them, and turn the town into a tourist destination.

The biggest event of the year in N-O-L is the Shaw Festival. This is a professional theater festival that runs from April through October. They do about 8 different plays throughout the season in three different theaters in town. One play is always a musical and the others are a variety of things. Typically, the plays are by Shaw or his contemporaries or are set in that time period. The plays we saw in 2006 were The Crucible by Arthur Miller and High Society by Cole Porter. The theater in N-O-L is never disappointing.
