i have 5 acres of steep, hot, dry land that in my minds eye is a pastoral, flat, english landscape. after i take off my rose colored glasses ... i accept the fact my land is laced with small goat trails threading throughout the hillside with hundreds and hundreds of stairs. gardening is hot, steep and threatening with rattlesnakes galore and free roaming munching deer, but i still have managed to plant several hundred of rose varieties and perennials, over 1200 named bearded iris and a large terraced hill for annuals each summer. i love to grow my plants from seeds and cuttings in a small greenhouse and pretty much choose to live out doors. a neighbor calls me a land girl, from the war days in britain, when some women worked the factories, other the land. i guess she thinks i took the wrong job, because my rouge and nail polish are the same color, dirt!
