Welcome to the Radical Fringe Red Hatters' official web site and picture trail. Ten friends formed the Radical Fringe Red Hatters' chapter in October 2002. We’ve experienced tremendous growth and now have over 100 members. Though we are based in Los Angeles/Beach Cities and most of us live in this area, some of our members travel from as far as Malibu, Thousand Oaks, Pasadena, San Fernando Valley, Long Beach, and other surrounding areas. So that everyone can have the fun of participating and to insure variety in our activities, each of our members has the opportunity to volunteer to plan a monthly gathering, which includes an interesting event plus time to break bread together and sit and chat. Our first official gathering was in Santa Barbara, where we had a scrumptious lunch at the Santa Barbara Bay Inn, visited the Art Museum and wandered through some fabulous shops. Each and every event since then has been memorable. The Red Hat Society describes itself as a disorganization and is mostly without rules. However, we borrow a couple from the official RHS website: 1)The spirit of the Red Hat Society forbids rules, per se. There is, however, ONE inflexible guideline that we must insist upon: You must be a woman of 50 or over (or you may be a Pink Hatter under 50), and you must attend functions in full regalia, (red hat, purple outfit for women 50 and over, or pink hat and lavender outfit for women under 50). 2)We Red Hatters love our men… but official RHS events are for us “girls!” If some husbands are included, women who are divorced or widowed find themselves feeling like fifth wheels - again. With an audience of husbands, chapterettes lose the freedom to let loose and be a little silly. The entire ambiance of the gathering changes. The Red Hat Society is for the (little) girl in all of us! The RHS website says that if you are attending an official Red Hat Society cruise or convention, you can certainly come with your husband, and even room with him. But he will need to entertain himself while you are attending official functions. However, this exception does not apply to Radical Fringe chapter events. At the formation of our chapter, our charter members determined that men would not be invited to our events. There have been a couple of exceptions, like the Hollywood Bowl on Father's Day, but this was a rare exception. The additional rules of our Radical Fringe chapter are that all members be respectful of each other and have a good time! As part of being respectful of each other, we ask that you not use our Red Hat Society chapter for business networking or selling your products, nor for the promotion of your politics or religion. If you would like to join us, we will be happy to add your email address to our list so that you may be kept informed of upcoming events. Because email spam rules make it difficult to handle our very large mailing list, we have decided to delete from the list any member who is out of touch for three consecutive months. We prefer to have active, participating members.
