Poem Entitled: Choked!
That ragged rascal, how could he!
Do such a thing for the life of me?
Just ten dollars and a match,
That’s all it took for the fire to catch.
He came into my nostrils and I puffed,
Took several draws and I huffed.
Along with it, it brought a high feeling;
One that made me want to leave my sac
And touch the ceiling.
Within ten seconds it was in my brain.
It got me coming back again and again.
My underdeveloped lungs were crushed,
Under the impact of that sticky black dust.
From the depths of my refuge, I bawled.
My tender and oh so sensitive skin crawled.
“Smaddi, save mi from dis sniek!
Hurry! Hurry! Or mi won’t have a choice fi mek.
That ragged rascal, how could he?
Mi cells start shrivel, mi body start cringe,
Mi feel like mi a hang pan a hinge.
O2, mi need it, mi a starve,
B’cuz a di oxygen debt it carve.
Smoking, lawd mi choking.
Dat ragged rascal how could he!
Do such a ting fi the life a mi?
Poor, poor likkle mi …..

Letter Expressive ! |
Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter out of deep concern and sympathy for the foetus of pregnant mothers. Why do pregnant mothers smoke? Like an addict craving for cocaine, they can do nothing but resort to smoking. These mothers often smoke, oblivious of the object growing inside them or thinking of the object as ‘it’. It is very unfair for that precious cocoon to suffer disadvantage, instead of getting a chance to spread its wings freely. The mother must shield the son of the soil from the sun or else he will be burned. Are pregnant mothers aware of the damage cigarette smoking causes on the foetus? Or are they just self-centered, uncaring and evil. Something has to be done now! Otherwise we will be dressed in black and white, watching the sun go down.
Cigarette is a human parasite that preys on the foetus via the mother. That brown and white monster causes a variety of diseases such as; cancers, bronchitis and emphysema. When careless mothers smoke, they open the line of transmission. “How on earth do they live with themselves?” In cases where the foetus undergoes these conditions, who is to be blamed? All fingers would point directly to the mother; since she has the responsibility of protecting the child at all costs.
Is the problem lack of awareness or is it carelessness? Allow me to suggest some possible solutions that might help alleviate this problem. Mothers can visit counsellors who will provide alternative measures that will help relieve the stress accompanied with pregnancy. Mothers should make an effort to stay away from both first and second-hand smoking as second-hand smoking poses the same magnitude of danger. The responsibility lies with the mother! Mothers, what are you going to do? “Are you going to simply sit back and let it go down the drain……?”
