  About Me
Cool Slideshows

Khama is her stage name and her style has the “Khama” touch. This versatile West Indian flavors her music with a little Caribbean flavor as well as a strong New York type realness and a hard-core delivery style. She captures in the music the reality of the times, and merges this with a little of the past and raps into the future at times. The self-effacing, self-proclaimed “STARR OF THA SOUTH” has graduated into the breath of fresh air the game’s lacking. Khama writes her own lyrics and entertains the idea of writing lyrics for other artists as well. Khama has been on The Rap Game on 99 Jamz with Big Lip Bandit and Super Cindy. She has entered numerous talent shows of which she was a finalist, but most of all she has been in the studio recording and working the radio stations with different DJs to promote her talent as a hip-hop/rap artist. Why this name?

Band History:
Train of thought
Khama: “Can’t Fall In Love”

“I had a dream like martin/ we were fighting like X/love isn’t simple/ after sex it’s stress/ Wondering if you love me/ and if you gone stay/ or you gone/ do like my pop’s/ and just run away/Will you be gentle with my ego/ He know/ so do you have to brag/ We know/ Love is pain and it makes me sad/ When you try on purpose to make me mad/ Then try to kiss away the anger/I know you/ but sometimes you are such a stranger/ and what’s strange/ I don’t know if I love you enough to put my heart in danger/ yeah I’ll eat from your plate and drink from your cup/ I aint co-signing no Rangers/ I aint signing no papers/take your eye off my paper/take you’re a** from my safe/ get you’re a** out my place/ yeah we cool/ but this was another mistake/ I suggest you be gone by the time I wake/ I just can’t!”

-Khama, “Can’t Fall In Love”

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS SONG?
I was just thinking from a woman’s point of view. A lot females think they are nothing without a man and a lot of mother’s perpetuate that. If you are a certain age and not in love or with kids something is wrong. The way some of us feel is I like you, I’ll sleep with you but you need to be going to your own house in the morning because I am not ready to get married. Yes a lot of it is that we have issues about our own parent’s marriage.

WHY DO YOU FEEL THAT AFTER SEX ITS STRESS?
It is. First you wonder should you give it away and then when you do, you wonder should you have given it away. Your dad in most cases stayed with your mom for a long time and if he left then why wouldn’t this guy that you don’t truly know yet. You worry what he’s going to tell his friends. You wonder how he truly feels because in most cases men do not share their emotions and you wonder how long before he’s looking for something else.

YOU FEEL MEN TRY ON PURPOSE TO MAKE WOMEN MAD?
I know they do. Like Neo said they get turned on for some reason when you get upset.

THEN THEY TRY TO KISS AWAY THE ANGER?
Yep. They think all is well with a kiss or sex.

HOW DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE AND THEY CAN STILL BE A STRANGER?

Listen, I like Mary J. Blige. I went to see her in concert just the other day but she has a hit song off the Waiting To Exhale Album called Not Gone Cry. Eleven years out of my life and what happened? I watched the movie, did you? He left that’s what he did. He left for the secretary now which wife out there thinks that her husband is going to do that after being together for eleven years? It is a movie but it is true life.

DOES THIS SONG MEAN THAT KHAMA CAN’T FALL INLOVE?
No. I have been married and so I have been in love. But for now I’m in love with my music. I’m not bashing love or men. Most men truly love you when they say that they do but the dating game has not changed over the years. They do want to hit that before they can truly say that they are in love with you and they do want to tell their friends about their conquests. In a perfect society I woman would wed a man and then have sex and live happily ever after, but in reality us sisters have careers just like the guys do and are increasingly not looking for long lasting relationships for more reasons than just the fear of getting hurt.

DO YOU THINK GUYS WILL BE OFFENDED BY THIS SONG? OR THE PUBLIC WILL THINK THAT YOU’RE PROMOTING THE WRONG THING?
I am not promoting anything. Will guys be offended? I don’t know. Why should they be? The song says nothing to bash men. It is no doubt the feelings of a woman in society today and it is in no doubt happening in society today. What are our mother’s promoting with their depencies on relationship and our fathers teaching us by always walking out on the sanctity of marriage?

n a Davie studio, Jimmy Star’s Hide away studio, Khama is sitting at the controls wearing a belly length chain that would make any male rapper in the game jealous and a Jordan throw over shirt that matches her Jordan boots. These items are just a few fruits of her labor. Khama has been putting in major work since 2000, work that’s going to make her a full-fledged star.

Hip-hop fans may look at you and think you’re not as hard as that.
Khama: Yes. Many people judge you by the way you look, and then there are those that listened to the album before the mix tape and judge me based on the album and thought that I was one sided. There are many different sides to me. I can spit at you to split you or spit at you to bring across a point or just say something that’s ridiculous and funny.

Take us through a day in the life of Khama.
Khama: On average I work anywhere 7 to 17 hrs a day, 50 to 80 hrs a week as a manager at a fast food restaurant but I make my schedule around shows and studio sessions. I go home to my dashund, Cinnamon, who I have to walk before I can sit down and write whatever.Sounds like a pretty hectic day.
Khama: It is I have to deal with a lot of crazy, angry and sometimes down right stupid customers for all those hours, manage and train a staff of about 20 and try to clear my mind when I get home but they still call me after I leave.

Do you like working in the fast food industry?
Khama: NO

Are you giving back by filling a void in the music industry?
Khama: I think that the game is unpredictable and has changed a great deal. You new what a hot album was before. You knew what lyrics meant before. You knew a Nas’s album was going to be a quality album even though the beats weren’t going to tear down the club. You knew an album that had a song in rotation was hot and most likely would go platinum but now the gimmicks and controversies have changed the game. I am not making music thinking that I can change the game or people’s outlook on rap, but there are still true hip hop heads that love what I do the way I do it. True hip hop entertains and it has many flavors from the story telling days of Fresh Prince to the singing and rapping of Queen Latifah and the Serious and hard Big Daddy Kane. Now it’s just drugs and violence. It’s crazy.

You seem like a laid back person. Do you get crazy?
Khama: In private or if I really know you. My friends give me the “what the H@@@?” look.

How did you acquire the beats for your album?
Khama: Mostly from this Kid named Max on some of the tracks recorded way back, but I also received tracks from Wolverine, a well known producer in Palm bay, Leoh of leo’s Lab, the best producer in Florida, yeah I said it! and Dj Money.

Any of these producer’s make crazy requests?
Khama: Well without naming names, one producer wanted me to sing a hook that he wrote on one of his tracks but the hook was garbage. At the time you don’t want to tell that person they on drugs but I just did what I wanted to do and if he didn’t like it then screw him. Some producers don’t really like you they just want their music heard and they’ll smile in your face but you’ll see it in their actions. Sometimes they even give you some corny a** beats but you rack it any way and it comes out a smash and they shocked but happy.

Do you have any cameos on the album?
Khama: I worked with a few upcoming artists on Starr. I worked with Larry (Leadman) Smith, Stephanie Booker, Eyvonne Booker, Corey (Vitamo) Gilbert, Maintain, Feezy and I’ve been performing in shows alongside Domique Nicole (she was a winner on Wild Out Wednesday on 106&Park), Little Bass (the son of Miami) who has that fire single Kool-Aid blazing up Miami.

What’s up with the pictures on the t-shirts and the spray painted logos?
Khama: I had to establish an image for myself. My music is about self love and empowerment, well to me anyway. I first did an outfit to go out of town for a Hurricane Katrina show and it was addictive ever since. I want to start my own clothing line because I love rocking my name and creating my own wardrobe.

What’s would be your vision for the look of the line?
Khama: Me. I wouldn’t make anything that I wouldn’t wear of course. Jeans, t-shits, polo’s. I love Jordan brand clothing and I waited for it. I always rocked the shoes and I waited for the colors. I would want a lot of color and styles that kids want to rock 24-7.

I heard you’re going to start a line of glasses as well. Is that true?
Khama: I had a pair of shades made with my logo and some people thought it was supercalifragicaladalicaladoseous. That’s gone be the name of the next song I write. It means fancy, high class, expensive something ordinarily poor people couldn’t acquire. Any way they suggested that I sell them. We’ll see.

What would you say is the biggest misconception about Khama?
Khama: The biggest misconception about Khama is that I only make educational, conscious or positive music. So some people are scared to work with me and others are scared to love me. I write what I see, hear, feel, smell and think. I am human. A lot of artists are judged based on which one of their songs come out first. For Nas is was when he came out with the kids telling them you can be anything and then he turns around with gold teeth and a ski mask and this was a thief’s theme. I am a vessel for words, events, stories, poems, songs, lessons and sermons. I am my music but most important I am human first.
