Barbara's Interests
Barbara Dawson Cassell:
HI, Most of my frineds know all about me but, for the few.
I was born at home in Welch, WV, April 23 1939. I went to Welch Grade School and on to graduate from Welch High School May 27, 1957. After that, I took many classes. Some credit and some non credit. I took classes at Frederick Community College and also Hagerstown Community College, where I have taken a number of on line classes. This is where I took clarinet lessons, too. I played with the New Horizon Band for a couple of years. Last year I took the guitar class. So now I am supposed to be learning on my own. I really need to work more on this.
I have completed the Graphoanalysis Course offered by the International Graphoanalysis Society. I was a certified graphologist for several years. I enjoy studying hand writing analysis, but it takes a long time to analyze someone handwriting correctly. It is a very interesting hobby.

Sept 24, 1960, I married John Cassell from Keystone, WV. He graduated from N-E in 1957. John 's career, before retiring was working for the Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC.
We have one daughter, Rhonda, married to Mike Ramsburg and two grandsons, Christopher 18 and Justin 13.( 2008) By now I am feeling very old. :)
Favorite saying:
" You do not get old until you out live your enthusiasm"
Being enthusiastic is just as important to keeping young as good health.I think "age is a state of mind" and I like to think mine is "lost in the fifties". I am quick to say I am not lost in the fifties, I just like to visit there.
I had lupus as a teenager and did not discover why I could not enjoy laying out in the sun to get a tan like my friends, and suffered so much joint pain and was always tired. Then at the age of 26, I was hospitalized and they found I had lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. So I am just returning to those fun loving years, vicariously.
Rules I live by:
I try to live with the Serenity Prayer.
"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. To change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference".
The last part is the hardest for me. I have been told, I worry too much. :).
Interests & Hobbies:
My interest are unlimited. I love learning and still take classes about everything from house repair to investing. I think everyone knows my hobbies. I collect 50's memorabilia. I especially like to get things from my home town of Welch or from my old high school. I also collect post cards from McDowell County. I love to dance and roller skates. I still do both when I get a chance. My neighbors do not have to watch for kids in the street here, They watch out for me.:)
I also started the first lupus support group in Frederick, MD. It was very rewarding helping young people deal with lupus and encourage them to have faith and courage.
TV Shows:
I don't watch a lot of TV. I do enjoy the musical shows like "American Idol" and "Grease:.( after last night I have to retrack my interest in Americam Idol). It has not been as good this year as years past , but i'm finished with it this year.
It is just not a talent show any more, it is popularity.
Most news shows interest me, being a conservative, I like Bill O'Reilly.
I lost interest in situation comedy years ago after 'The Dick Vav Dyke Show" and "That Girl" and others. I cannot see the humor in the later year shows. I guess my favorite things to watch on TV are old movies. I can get lost in them.
Favorite Music & Bands:
MY favorite music is of course, Rock and Roll. but I do enjoy everything from Blue Grass to classical. My moods dictates what I want to listen to. If I am sad, I listen to country, Happy, Rock and Roll and if I feel creative I need Classical. I am also very fond of Big Band music. So it is obvious that most of todays music does not interest me. :-)
Favorite Reads:
I do not read a lot, it slows me down, but when I do, it has to be thought provoking. The last book I read was,"The Five People You Meet in Heaven", by Mitch Albon. It was short and sweet.
I am now reading "The Seat of The Soul", by Gary Zukav.
It is about authentic empowerment and the alignment of the personality with the soul.It explains how we do not have to limit our selves to just 5 senses. We can get more out of life by being a multisensory person. That is where our intution and imagination come in to play. It is interesting and I will be reading it for some time. It might help be a better more calm person.

These are photos of me and John our senior year in high school. We did not meet each other until 1960.
I was working at the First National Bank in Bluefield, WV and he came in to see his cousin Flora. She introduced us. I guess he made an impression. We were married in Sept of 60.

I don't like those bad storms. The hurricane season we have here is my biggest gripe against Fl. I guess. I love the fall and winter months here though.

Good morning,

We had a wonderful weekend. Saturday night we sang in Marble Falls at First Baptist Church. Sunday morning we sang at Granite Mountain Baptist in Marble Falls, Sunday afternoon we drove to Burnet and sang at Country Oaks Assisted Living (This was my favorite) Sunday evening we headed back and stopped at the First Baptist Church in Blanco for our last concert, then we headed home. What a wonderful weekend we had, even though I am really tired today..I feel so blessed to be able to share the love of God with others.

Have a wonderful and relaxing day. I have a pile of laundry to catch up on now, but mostly we are going to rest today.

Hugs,
June

Barb I love keeping up with your site. I especailly love the old pics. They bring back many happy memories of the years we lived in Welch. I love the train pics, and especially remember the beautiful Powhatan Arrow. That was the train everyone wanted to ride back when. I do remember sitting in our living room on Hobart street one evening in 1949 or 50 and hearing a terrific boom. Seems two trains had collided head on in town at the staion. Sure did put a scare into one little girl. Does anyone else remember that one? Also my step dad worked on the railroad so he has lots of good stories. Please keep the news coming lady, I love it!!! Thanks..
