Reference diabetes information
American Diabetes Association
www.diabetes.org/
They have tons of stuff along with
suggested recipes, etc.

The first thing to deal with in understanding
that ones has diabetes is........
getting past "denial".
Most people will want a second or third opinion....
some will insist they don't have it and will
try to continue doing what they have all along.

The ideal glucose (sugar) level range
is 102 - 117. If it goes much below that,
or above that range you have a problem.

Diabetes is controlled through proper diet,
exercise, and usually medication.
The earlier its detected the better it is to
come up with a plan to control it.
Some people can actually stay on a good
diet and exercise program, and do not have
to take medication. Check your sugar level,
and check it often.

There is no such thing as "a borderline diabetic".
Either you have it, or you don't have it.
If you do, then you need to decide to control it,
instead of allowing it to control you.

Keep in mind, that you can have up to 15-servings
of food per day.
1-serving = approximately 3-ounces.
So therefore its recommended you could get
by with even less than that amount,
perhaps even 12-servings.

CARBS & SUGAR
*************************
Pay attention to your carbohydrate intake.
Carbohydrates turn into 100% sugar.
Thats why many diabetics read the labels
on the food they buy, checking more to the
carbohydrate content, as to the sugar content.
Also, keep in mind just because
the packaging may have "No Sugar" or "Sugar Free"
you still need to check that label.
Many of the sugar free item's have more
carbohydrates than the regular type food item.

Also, you can subscribe to the Diabetes Forecast,
a magazine designed for those of us with diabetes.
In it you will find articles relating to the disease,
and also a good recipe section,
usually four different suggestions per issue.
It has a penpal section where you can contact
others and share your knowledge with others
that have the same problem.
There is generally a question/answer section, also.

If you are diagnosed with it, its recommended
to keep on your person, or near you items
like glucose tablets in case you have an
extreme sugar low.
You can buy these at most drug stores,
or pharmacies.

BE PREPARED
*******************
You may want to opt to have fresh
fruit like an orange.
Even a candy bar (1/2) or the real
Classic Coke can help bring up the sugar level.
A tube of cake icing is another quick
remedy, and easy to keep on hand.
You should eat your meals on a regular basis,
skipping a meal is not a good idea for any diabetic.
Try planning your meals in a measured amount,
and try to eat near the same time each day.
You can have snacks between meals,
but they have to be of regulated sensible nature.

You should have on your person some
type of designation advising others that
you are a diabetic.
Many wear a bracelet or a necklace with
that information, and some even
include the type of medication you take.
Have a list of all your medications either on
your person, or in your purse just in case
you become a victim of a medical emergency.
In the home, have a similar list posted either
on the refrigerator door, or a visible bulletin board,
or message center so emergency personnel can find it.

Another good means of treatment
is for anyone with diabetes to take
classes on how to manage it.
Many places offer these,
including some health plans.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Photobucket

Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps, STR . Read
and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately,
the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe
brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke
.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple
questions:

S *Ask the individual
to SMILE.

T *Ask the person
to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)

(i.e. It is sunny out today)

R *Ask him or
her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with
ANY ONE of these tasks,
call 999/911 immediately and describe the
symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out
his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the
other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who reads this,
you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

MENTAL HEALTH
************************
Only a few years ago this subject was taboo.
No one talked about it,and if you did,
you were immediately "Labeled"

Thank goodness and thanks to media
exposure, this subject is no longer
the scarey subject that people shun from.

Today almost every person world wide
has a family member suffering from
some sort of mental health issue,
wheather it be, depression,anxiety,
panic attacks,or other conditions.

The important thing to remember is,
there is a multitude of help available.
If you think you need help,
contact your clinic or doctor.
Don't try and deal with it on your own.

Here in Australia, there are many
organisations that are there to help.
Beyond Blue and LifeLine
are just two that are constantly
in the media.

Remember
"You are NOT alone"

Why am I talking about this subject ,
I can hear you say...
Well as most of our regulars know,
this time last year I recovered from
major surgery..and not long after that
I was a survivor of a "Hit & Run"
while crossing a road.
The physical injuries healed but
the impact of the accident sent me
mentally into a downward spiral.
I now suffer from Agraphobia...Anxiety..
Post Traumatic Stress
and Depression.
Never in my wildest dreams did I ever
think I would be in this position.
Depression to me just 12 months
or so ago just didnt feature in my vocabulary..
until it happened to me.
Thankfuly I have a wonderful Doctor
who is still treating me for all the above,
but he also put me in touch with a
Personal Support Program and
Victims Of Crime Support
(both Therapy groups)
without this help I don't think
I would be where I am today..
I call my self a Survivor as
opposed to Victim because
Survivor is the positive..
I know I will rise above this in time.

So please seek help
and as I said earlier
You are Not Alone
there are people willing to help.

  VOICE YOUR OPINION
Rocky has started the ball rolling with
our "Adopt a Soldier " campaign.

Heres what he had to say..

Hey there folks, just wanted to let you know I just got in from dropping a package in the mail going to Al. It doean't have a lot of 1 thing just a little bit of everything. I'll be doing a little better with sending stuff as I find out more of what is needed. I'm going to drop a note (letter) in the mail tomorrow to the Unit c/o Al. Just to say hey. Anyway, just wanted to pass along that we have 1 on it's way. (((hugs to ya))) Rocky

Rockys little girls class has got in on the project too..

My daughters Kindergarten class adopted 2 soldiers. Her teacher is going to be gather care packages to send also. She's going to let the kids send things to them. She noted it in her online newsletter from her school website and will update a little once in a while and I'll pass it along to you. I think I already send you the photos of us planting flowers in Honor of our Troops the same day we did the planting of flowers for 9/11. I just wanted to pass on to you that the class is involved now so it's looking good for a little more support. (((hugs))) Rocky

SAFETY MESSAGE FROM TEE
I know how it feels to wake up some morning and find a vehicle missing out of my driveway. It happened to me, but they broke a window to get mine.
Then took the truck out to a desolate location removed the tailgate, splashed it with gasoline, and burned it.

When I got the new replacement I immediately had an alarm installed, and purchased a steering lock, as well as a brake pedal lock. Not to mention I bought additional ammo for two different handguns.

*******
Here is info worth the price of your car....
WHAT WILL the car thieves
THINK OF NEXT?

The car thieves peer through the windshield
of your car or truck,
write down the VIN # from the label on the dash,
go to the local car dealership and request
a duplicate key based on the VIN #.
I didn't believe this e-mail,
so I called Chrysler-Dodge and
pretended I had lost my keys
They told me to just bring in the VIN #,
and they would cut me one on the spot,
and I could order the keyless
device if Iwanted.

The Car Dealer's Parts Department will make a
duplicate key from the VIN #,
and collect payment from the thief who will return
to your car.
He doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the
vehicle, or draw attention to himself.
All he has to do is walk up to your car,
insert the key and off he goes to a local
Chop Shop with your vehicle.
You don't believe it?
It IS that easy.

To avoid this from happening to you,
simply put some tape (electrical
tape, duct tape or medical tape)
across the VIN Metal Label located on
the dash board.
By law, you cannot remove the VIN,
but you CAN cover it so it can't be
viewed through the windshield by a car thief.
I slipped a 3 x 5 card over the VIN NUMBER.
