I'm a plant nut - what else can I say?! I've grown mostly succulents since I was a teenager (which makes it 35 years now...) I'm now concentrating my growing on Hoyas, Dischidias, Haworthias, Gasterias, some Aloes with a "spattering" of a few other oddball plants. I'm a member of our local cactus and succulent club, River City Cactus & Succulent Society. What a great way to spend one Sunday a month - with like-minded plant nuts!
To support my compulsion, I co-own a business with my mother - Karen's Fireside. We are a full-service banquet facility, party-planning service, caterers... Weddings are 95% of our business and we really love what we do! My mother is the founder of the business (in other words, the one who took all the risks!) and I came into the business full-time about 9 years after she started catering (though I've worked with her from the beginning...) She's the cook (and what an AWSOME cook she is!!!) and I'm the "setup artist" and bar manager for events.
I'm married - my husband is Mark. He's a big ol' tuff guy - a sheet metal worker by trade, a biker by choice. He had a Harley when I met him 26 years ago, sold it in 1987 when we bought our house when I "domesticated" him. Well, we married in 1989 and he always missed his bike... :-( In July 2000, he decided he just HAD to have another Harley, and I saw this as my chance to have a greenhouse. So the deal was struck - we refinanced our house and I would get a greenhouse of equal value to his Harley. So I now have a 7'x16' greenhouse off my kitchen and he has a 1986 FLT that he has turned into a work of art!
We have no children, except Lucy, our German Shepherd who joined our family in Nov., 2006. She's the light of my life, my fluff-muffin deluxe. Then just July of 2008, we were blessed with two kitties, Pearl and Bella. They've quickly become Lucy's "babies" and they often sleep together. What fun they are!
... and that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!
